Saving music, helping musicians - an organizing idea

I’ve read a lot in the past couple months about the music industry.  As far as I can tell, the conversation about how the music industry is totally messed up and hurtful to musicians and the production of great music has been going on for the last 5-8 years, without a seeming change in the downward direction of sustainability for anyone other than the uber successful.

Ok, so here’s my idea.  Spotify currently has three levels - free, unlimited, and premium.  for $0, $5, and $10 respectively.   How about adding a fourth option, call it Spotify Fan and charge $15.  The only difference would be that on top of the premium services the other $5 would be split between the artists based on who you listened to.   There would have to be an organizing campaign behind it, but I think there’s enough fans that would be willing to pay $5 or even more a month, if they knew that the money was going to support the musicians.

Ok, that’s my idea.  It might not save music, but it might make it a little more sustainable for some of the musicians.  I still go to the shows and buy CDs directly from the bands, which apparently is still going to be your best bet for getting money in their hands, but this seems like an idea that might have an impact.
